Prescription: Medicide

The Goodness of Planned Death

Dr. Jack Kevorkian

Dr. Jack Kevorkian gained notoriety by being the first physician to admit publicly that he assisted individuals suffering from painful or debilitating illnesses to die peacefully. Some have called him "Dr. Death" or "Jack the Reaper", while to others he is "Dr. Dignity", a noble humanitatian, and opinion polls overwhelmingly support his efforts. The state of Michigan has attenpted to prohibit him from performing assisted suicides, even if it has to imprison him.

In an AP interview, Dr. Kevorkian makes his position clear: "Anybody who's facing imminent and unavoidable death should be given the choice to die humanely in an acceptable environment. This is self-determination...based on the autonomy of the person's life. This book is my answer to anybody. It's an honest book, honestly stated. That's why (critics) call me strident."

It's up to you to decide if Dr. Kevorkian "is a hero who helps suffering people end their misery with dignity...(or) a villain who has usurped the almighty power to decide who should live." -USA Today

Prescription: Medicide is ahead of its time. It defends the right to suicide, but also points out the need to harvest organs in order to save lives.

"He tells the truth as he sees it and lets the chips fall where they may. You can't fault his sincerity." -The Times Literary Supplement

"His book is likely to stir a hornet's nest of controversy." -Publisher's Weekly
