CHIROPRACTIC

THE VICTIM'S PERSPECTIVE

GEORGE MAGNER

EDITED BY STEPHEN BARRETT, M.D.

FOREWARD BY WILLIAM T. JARVIS, PH.D.

Like many people, author George Magner suffered chronic pain from a back problem. And like many people, he sought in desperation the help of chiropractic when he was unable to find relief through medical treatment and physical therapy. What followed was a nightmare of incompetence that has left Magner with loss of the full sensation of touch, neck and shoulder pain, a feeling of pins and needles in his left foot, tinnitus-and the continuing pain of his original complaint.

Disillusioned with and injured by chiropractic treatment, Magner resolved to help others who have also been injured by chiropractors and to educate the public about the potential risks of chiropractic. Chiropractic: The Victim's Perspective is the result of Magner's intensive research into this highly touted "alternative" healthcare.

Not since Ralph Lee Smith's 1969 landmark work, At Your Own Risk, has a full-length book for the consumer been offered on the subject of chiropractic. Chiropractic: The Victim's Perspective is an up-to-date, well-researched, and documented analysis of the claims and benefits of chiropractic. With significant input from scientifically oriented chiropractors, Magner measures the profession by both scientific and consumer-protection standards.

Chiropractic claims are legion, but are they valid? Are chiropractic "subluxations" real, and do they ever cause disease? Are there any benefits from regular spinal manipulations? Can spinal manipulation replace immunisation? Are regular x-rays appropriate as a screening procedure? Is spinal manipulation safe?

What about chiropractors themselves? Should chiropractors be considered primary-care physicians, capable of total healthcare? Do chiropractors have training and experience equivalent to that of medical doctors?

Written with courage and compassion, Chiropractic: The Victim's Perspective will enable consumers deluged with the current claims of chiropractic as an "alternative" healthcare to make educated decisions about their treatment.

George Manger is the founder of Victims of Chiropractic, a support network and clearinghouse for information about chiropractic's hazards. Prior to his retirement, he was an agricultural research technician with the Agricultural Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture.
